Modernization Of The 220 kV L-H-K Transmission Line In The Samarkand And Navoi Regions, Uzbekistan

Project Overview:

The L-H-K transmission line modernization project covers the modernization of the existing transmission line between the Kattakurgan and Khimiya substations. The project is being implemented under the Asian Development Bank-financed “Digitize to Decarbonize – Power Transmission Grid Enhancement Project,” aimed at modernizing and improving the efficiency of Uzbekistan’s main power transmission infrastructure.

The L-H-K transmission line connects the Kattakurgan and Khimiya substations. Under the overall program, approximately 355 km of 110 kV and 220 kV overhead transmission lines comprising 12 lines across seven regions of Uzbekistan are planned to be modernized, together with the rehabilitation and expansion of four 220 kV substations.

The project aims to enhance the reliability of the power transmission system, reduce transmission losses, increase grid transfer capacity, support industrial development, facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, and contribute to the digitalization of Uzbekistan’s power system.

Project Location:

Samarkand and Navoi Regions, Uzbekistan

Scope of Work:

Transmission Line Civil and Erection Works:

  • Preparation of the transmission line route and work areas. 
  • Excavation for tower foundations, construction of foundations, followed by backfilling and soil compaction. 
  • Installation of tower grounding systems and waterproofing of underground structures as specified by the project. 
  • Assembly and erection of steel transmission line towers, including the dismantling and replacement of existing towers and structures where required. 
  • Execution of civil and erection works at crossings with railways, roads, and other engineering infrastructure. 

Conductor, Overhead Ground Wire and Line Hardware Installation:

  • Stringing and tensioning of conductors, including sag adjustment and final securing. 
  • Installation of insulator strings, suspension and tension hardware, spacers, vibration dampers, and other line fittings. 
  • Installation of overhead ground wires and Optical Ground Wire (OPGW). 
  • Installation of OPGW joint boxes, cable downleads, and grounding components. 
  • Installation of jumper connections and connections to existing transmission line sections in accordance with the project requirements. 

Testing and Commissioning:

  • Quality control of tower, conductor, overhead ground wire, insulator, and line hardware installation. 
  • Verification of conductor and ground wire sag and installation parameters. 
  • Measurement of tower grounding resistance. 
  • Measurement and testing of the OPGW-based fiber-optic communication link. 
  • Performance of transmission line inspections and tests specified in the project documentation. 
  • Preparation of as-built documentation and participation in the acceptance and commissioning of the facility.
